Identify the cover area before choosing a replacement

Separate the canopy, any lower cockpit or tonneau cover, and any fixed roof or windscreen. A raised enclosure and a lower cockpit cover do different jobs. Record which fabric panels you need replaced rather than ordering from the overall length of the hull.

Look at how the current fabric meets the screen or cabin, where its rear closure sits and which openings provide access. If your boat has changed supports or fastening positions, tell Ryan before a sample is assessed. A photograph of another Mayland 21 is useful context but does not prove that its cover will fit yours.

Compare the existing cover types

Photograph the fitted panels and connections

Take the first photographs while the cover is fitted, before removing a sample. Show both the overall shape and the details that a loose piece of canvas cannot explain. Record a problem at its actual location instead of stretching the cover into a different position for a photograph.

• A view from each side, plus the front and rear of the fitted cover.
• The retained supports and the way the roof or canopy panels follow them.
• The screen or cabin connection, fastening line and any places where the cloth pulls or sags.
• Window edges, panel joins, zips and the openings used to board or reach the cockpit.
• Close-ups of torn cloth, brittle windows, loose stitching or damaged fasteners, alongside a wider view showing where they sit.

Decide what needs a repair assessment

A damaged window, zip or local seam may be repairable when the surrounding cloth remains sound. Widespread thinning, brittle fabric or strain in several panels needs a broader assessment before further repair is agreed. Do not assume that replacing a single window will solve leaking cloth or an unsupported, pooling roof.

Describe how the existing cover fits when normally secured and whether its supports or fastening positions have changed. Photographs help Ryan distinguish a local fault from a pattern, support or fit problem. An assessment comes before a promise to copy the sample.

Choose fabric for the actual cover and its supports

Marine-grade acrylic and PVC are options to discuss for the agreed cover area. Consider the panel layout, support, windows, fastening line, handling and how the cover is folded or stowed. Neither the model name nor a fabric label determines the correct specification for every Mayland 21.

Ventilation, support and care still matter. A different material does not by itself prevent condensation or turn a cockpit cover into protection for the whole vessel. We supply replacement fabric for the agreed canopy, cockpit or tonneau area and suitable retained supports. We do not supply new supporting frames or on-site fitting and installation, and we do not make whole-boat or winter-storage covers.

Agree the sample, dimensions and quote before posting

Send fitted photographs to Ryan for assessment, then agree the cover specification, quote and suitable sample before posting anything. A model name or overall boat length and beam does not establish a cover pattern.

If the old cover is suitable, its panel shapes and fixing positions can form part of the replacement pattern. If pieces are missing, it has shrunk or it no longer fits the retained supports, explain that first. Photographs and additional agreed measurements may be needed; copying an unsuitable sample does not guarantee a correct fit.

Care for the cloth, windows and fastenings

Follow the care instructions for the actual fabric and window material. Allow the cover to dry before packing, avoid hard creases in clear windows and keep fasteners working without forcing a strained panel. Inspect the support and fastening line after use and adverse weather, and address loose stitching or local damage before it spreads.

Cover life depends on exposure, support, fit, handling and maintenance. Inspect the condition of the fabric, seams, windows and fittings rather than relying on a fixed number of years.
