When to Repair — and When to Replace
The right decision between repairing and replacing a boat cover depends on the extent of the damage relative to the remaining serviceable life of the cover as a whole. A general rule: if the main fabric (not windows, zips, or fittings) is structurally sound, repair is almost always the economical choice. If the main fabric is splitting, heavily degraded, or has multiple large holes, replacement is the better long-term decision.
Cases Where Repair Makes Sense
- Cracked or yellowed windows — clear vinyl windows typically degrade 3–4 times faster than the main fabric. Window replacement from £190 is far cheaper than a new cover, and the repaired cover will typically give another 5+ years of service.
- Failed zip sliders — the slider mechanism wears before the zip teeth. A slider replacement (£190 per zip) restores full function to a zip that otherwise appears broken.
- Seam separation — most seam failures start at stress points: corners, window borders, and attachment areas. Re-stitching a seam costs £190–150 and restores full strength if caught early.
- Torn attachment hems — if the hem area around press studs or buckle straps has torn, this is a localised repair. From £190.
Cases Where Replacement Is Right
- The main PVC or canvas fabric is cracking, powdering, or delaminating — this is UV degradation of the base material and cannot be repaired
- There are multiple large tears or holes requiring patches that would cover more than 30% of the cover area
- The cover is more than 12–15 years old and showing widespread wear throughout
