Leicestershire Waterways Navigation near Leicester
Leicester sits at a fascinating crossroads of inland navigation, with the River Soar flowing directly through the city and connecting to the wider Grand Union Canal network. This makes it a prime location for various types of inland boating. The River Soar itself offers a generally gentle and scenic passage, free from tidal concerns that challenge coastal boaters, yet its flow can vary, adding to the dynamic nature of navigation. Cruising these waters allows for exploration of both urban landscapes and serene countryside.
The Grand Union Canal, an arterial route for many canal boats, threads its way through Leicestershire, providing essential links north and south. Boaters navigating these routes will become well-acquainted with the series of locks that manage changes in elevation. Key among these are Belgrave Lock, situated conveniently close to Leicester city centre, and further along, Thurmaston Lock and Barrow Lock, which are vital passages for those travelling towards Loughborough and beyond. These locks are integral to the waterway experience, requiring careful handling and robust boat covers that can withstand frequent use and exposure to changing conditions.
Mooring and Marina Facilities
Leicester and its surrounding areas offer excellent mooring facilities catering to a wide range of boaters. Leicester Marina, often considered a central hub for boating activity within the city, provides secure and convenient moorings with easy access to the River Soar and the city centre's amenities. Its location makes it a popular choice for both permanent residents and visiting boats, all of whom benefit from a reliable cover to protect their craft from urban and natural elements.
Just a short distance north of the city, Birstall Marina is another highly regarded facility. Nestled in a quieter setting near the village of Birstall, it offers a tranquil environment often preferred by those seeking a more rural feel while still being well-connected to the main waterways. For those journeying further up the River Soar, the charming village of Barrow upon Soar provides popular mooring spots, known for its picturesque surroundings and access to local services. Additionally, numerous River Soar moorings are available along its banks, ranging from official sites to more informal spots, each requiring a durable boat cover to safeguard vessels against the elements, bird droppings, and natural debris that accumulate along riverbanks.
Weather, Seasonal Conditions and Cover Requirements
Leicester, like much of inland Britain, experiences a temperate climate characterised by distinct seasons, all of which demand robust protection for your boat. While coastal boaters contend with corrosive salt spray, inland craft face their own set of challenges. Rainfall is a consistent factor throughout the year in Leicestershire, varying from light drizzles to heavy downpours, making waterproof and well-fitting covers essential to prevent water ingress and protect interior fabrics and electronics.
Even on cloudy days, UV radiation is a significant threat, causing gradual degradation of boat materials, fading upholstery, and weakening external components. A high-quality marine-grade cover from UK Boat Covers offers crucial UV protection, significantly extending the life and aesthetic appeal of your boat. Additionally, seasonal conditions bring varying temperature fluctuations, as well as leaf fall in autumn and potential frost in winter. Our covers are designed to withstand these diverse conditions, ensuring your boat remains protected from environmental wear and tear, bird droppings, and general grime, whether it's moored at Belgrave Lock, Birstall Marina, or any other location along the River Soar.
Popular Boat Types near Leicester
The waterways around Leicester are a haven for a diverse fleet of inland vessels, each with specific cover requirements that UK Boat Covers are adept at meeting. Narrowboats, synonymous with the Grand Union Canal and River Soar, are ubiquitous in this region. These elongated, often brightly painted vessels require specialised covers such as pram covers for the stern cockpit, cratch covers for the bow, and full-length fitted covers that precisely follow their unique lines to protect against weather and maintain internal temperatures.
UK Boat Covers makes covers for specific areas, including cockpit and tonneau covers, cratch covers and replacement canopy canvas. We do not make whole-boat or winter-storage covers, or supply or install supporting framework. Tell us which area needs covering before requesting a quote.
