Frequently Asked Questions
Do you make covers for narrowboats and canal boats?
Yes, we specialize in custom covers for narrowboats including full-length tonneau covers, cabin covers, cratch covers, and bimini tops. We serve all UK inland waterways including the Grand Union, Oxford, and Leeds-Liverpool canals.
How much does a narrowboat cover cost?
Narrowboat cover pricing depends on length, coverage type, and fabric choice. Cratch covers and small sections start from around £250, with full-length tonneau covers priced individually. Send your old cover for an exact quote. No VAT charged.
What's the best material for a canal boat cover?
For narrowboats, we recommend either marine-grade acrylic (breathable, UV-resistant) or heavy-duty PVC (fully waterproof). Acrylic suits summer use, while PVC is better for winter storage. Both withstand UK canal conditions.
Can you copy my existing narrowboat cover?
Yes, we copy existing narrowboat covers exactly. Post your old cover to us and we'll create an identical replacement with improved materials and fasteners where needed. 6-day turnaround, UK-wide postal service.
Covers for Longboats and Full-Length Canal Boats
The term "longboat" is often used interchangeably with narrowboat in general conversation, though strictly it refers to the longer examples — boats of 60ft or more. From a cover perspective, the main challenge of longer boats is that full tonneau covers need to be made in more sections (typically four or five for a 70ft boat) to remain manageable to handle as individual panels.
Multi-Section Tonneau Design
Our standard approach for longboats is to make the full tonneau in sections that correspond to the main sections of the boat: a forward cratch/roof section, two or three mid-roof sections over the main cabin area, and a stern section. Each section attaches to its neighbours with weather-resistant zips, creating a continuous covered surface from bow to stern. Individual sections can be removed for access without disturbing the rest.
Cratch and Stern Covers
Regardless of boat length, cratch covers and stern covers are sized to the respective bow and stern profiles. A 70ft narrowboat has the same cratch cover as a 50ft narrowboat of the same beam — the cratch dimensions don't change with length. Only the number of tonneau sections changes.
Full tonneau sets for boats over 65ft from £1,079. Cratch covers from £429. No VAT. Get a free quote for your longboat's specific length and configuration.
