The Stratford-upon-Avon Canal runs 25.5 miles from Lapworth in the north to the Bancroft Basin in Stratford-upon-Avon, where it joins the River Avon in the shadow of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Rescued from dereliction by the National Trust in the early 1960s — one of the first successful canal restorations in Britain — the canal is now a popular cruising route through the Shakespeare Country of south Warwickshire. The canal's northern section from Lapworth to Wootton Wawen features some striking barrel-roofed lock cottages unique to this waterway, while the Wilmcote Flight of 11 locks provides the main ascent from the Avon valley. The split bridges — a distinctive design where the towpath bridge is split in the middle to allow the tow rope to pass through — are another charming feature of this canal.
