The South Yorkshire Navigation encompasses the waterways connecting the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation at Bramwith Junction with the River Trent via the Stainforth & Keadby Canal, as well as the New Junction Canal running north to connect with the Aire & Calder Navigation. This network of approximately 25 miles forms a vital part of the Yorkshire waterway system, enabling craft to complete a circular route around the South Yorkshire coalfield area or to transit between the Humber ports and the inland canal network. The Stainforth & Keadby Canal runs across the flat South Yorkshire landscape past Thorne and Crowle to Keadby on the River Trent. The New Junction Canal, as its name suggests, is a later addition (1905) providing a direct link north. The flat, exposed South Yorkshire plain means these waterways are subject to strong prevailing winds, particularly cold north-easterlies in winter and warm south-westerlies in summer.
