The River Stort Navigation runs 14 miles from Bishop's Stortford in Hertfordshire south through rural Essex to its junction with the Lee Navigation at Feilde's Weir near Hoddesdon. The navigation has 15 locks and provides a delightful, quiet cruising experience through some of the most attractive countryside in the south-east of England, largely free from the urban development that characterises much of the Lee Valley. Bishop's Stortford at the head of navigation is an attractive market town with good moorings and easy access to the historic centre. The river passes Sawbridgeworth, a village with a pleasant lock and good pub, before entering the more pastoral Essex countryside approaching Harlow. The Stort Navigation connects via the Lee Navigation to the Thames and the wider London waterways network, making it a popular destination for narrowboats and cruisers based in London.
