Montgomery Canal Boat Covers

The Montgomery Canal is a 34-mile waterway running along the Wales-England border from Frankton Junction on the Llangollen Canal south through Llanymynech and Welshpool to Newtown in Powys. Much of the canal was closed in the 20th century, but significant restoration has taken place, with the section from Frankton to Burgedin now fully navigable and the southern sections progressively reopening. The canal is notable for its exceptional wildlife interest, much of it designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest owing to rare aquatic plants including floating water-plantain. Welshpool provides the main boating centre, with good moorings and easy access to the town and its market. The canal passes through gentle agricultural countryside in the Severn and Vyrnwy valleys, with the Cambrian Mountains of Wales providing a dramatic backdrop. The border country climate is typically damp, and the SSSI restrictions along parts of the canal mean management of moorings and boat use is carefully monitored.
