The Macclesfield Canal is a beautiful contour canal running 26 miles along the western edge of the Peak District, providing one of the finest canal views in England: the Cheshire Plain stretching westward and the rugged moorlands of Staffordshire rising to the east. Opened in 1831, one of the last canals to be built in England before railway competition ended the canal age, the Macclesfield maintains a level pound for most of its length, with the only locks being the impressive Bosley Flight of 12 near the southern end and a few at the northern junction with the Peak Forest Canal at Marple. The canal forms part of the Cheshire Ring, one of England's most popular circular cruising routes, and is particularly busy with hire boats during the summer. The hilltop setting means the canal is exposed to prevailing south-westerly winds on its western facing sections, and the proximity to the Pennines means rainfall is higher than on lower-lying waterways.
