Loch Lomond is Scotland's most famous loch and the largest body of fresh water in Britain by surface area, stretching 24 miles from Balloch in the south towards Ardlui in the north. The loch sits at the heart of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park and encompasses over 30 islands, some inhabited and others managed as nature reserves. The loch changes character dramatically along its length: the wide southern basin is sheltered and suitable for all craft, while the narrow northern reaches between the steep mountains can be subject to violent squalls that develop with little warning when wind is funnelled down the glens. Scottish west coast weather means frequent rain, persistent south-westerlies, and — particularly at the loch's southern end, close to Glasgow — mild but overcast conditions for much of the year.
