Custom boat covers for the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal. Marine-grade canopies for narrowboats and coastal vessels on this unique ship canal.
The Gloucester & Sharpness Canal is unique among English inland waterways: built to a commercial ship canal standard in the early 19th century, it runs 16 miles from the tidal River Severn at Sharpness Docks to Gloucester Docks, bypassing the treacherous tidal waters of the lower Severn. At 70 feet wide and 18 feet deep, it is the broadest and deepest canal in Britain, regularly accommodating ocean-going vessels. Gloucester Docks, magnificently restored as a heritage and commercial area, is the terminus, with its Victorian warehouses now housing museums, restaurants, and the National Waterways Museum. Sharpness Docks at the tidal end remain commercially active. The fascinating Purton hulks — a collection of abandoned vessels deliberately beached to reinforce the Severn bank — are a unique and eerie sight along the towpath. The wide, exposed canal surface means wind can be a significant factor, and the tidal connection at Sharpness requires careful timing. UV exposure on the open water sections and Severn Valley rainfall make good boat covers essential. UK Boat Covers provides bespoke covers for all Gloucester & Sharpness canal vessels. No VAT.
