The Erewash Canal runs 11.5 miles through the industrial heartland of the East Midlands, connecting the River Trent at Trent Lock near Long Eaton north to Langley Mill in Derbyshire, where it meets the Cromford and Nottingham Canals. Opened in 1779 to serve the coal mines of the Erewash Valley, the canal was a commercial artery for over a century before declining in the face of railway competition. Today the restored canal provides a popular cruising route through an interesting mix of urban and semi-rural landscape, passing through Long Eaton, Ilkeston, and Kimberley. Trent Lock at the southern end, where the Erewash meets the Trent and the Soar Navigation, is one of the best-known canal junctions in the East Midlands, with a fine old pub and popular moorings. The canal has 15 locks and generally straightforward navigation.
