The Droitwich Canals — comprising the Droitwich Barge Canal and the Droitwich Junction Canal — form a 7-mile waterway linking the River Severn at Hawford to the River Salwarpe and then to the Worcester & Birmingham Canal at Hanbury Wharf. After decades of dereliction, the canals were beautifully restored and reopened in 2011, creating a new cruising loop through the historic salt town of Droitwich Spa. The canals' history is intimately connected with Droitwich's celebrated salt industry: brine from underground springs was so rich in salt that barges carrying salt needed no ballast. Today the restored canals provide a quiet and picturesque cruise through Worcestershire countryside. The Barge Canal follows the River Salwarpe through a wildlife-rich valley, while the Junction Canal climbs through seven locks to the higher pound of the Worcester & Birmingham Canal. The restoration has created an attractive cruising route for narrowboaters exploring the Severn Ring.
