Cromford Canal Boat Covers

The Cromford Canal is one of Britain's most historically significant waterways, opening in 1794 to serve Richard Arkwright's revolutionary cotton mills at Cromford — now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The southern section of the canal, running from Cromford Wharf to Ambergate, is largely restored and forms a beautiful linear nature reserve in the Derwent Valley. The northern sections beyond the collapsed Butterley Tunnel are currently unnavigable, though restoration efforts continue. The canal passes the magnificent Leawood Pump House, a Victorian beam engine that still pumps water from the River Derwent to the canal and operates on special steaming weekends. Cromford Wharf is the centre of boating activity, with trip boats and canoes available for hire. The narrow valley setting means the canal is sheltered from strong winds but subject to heavy rainfall from the Peak District hills, and in winter, frost can be severe.
