The highlight of the Caldon is the journey through Consall Forge, a remote and wooded gorge accessible only by canal or footpath, where the canal threads beneath dramatic limestone cliffs and past the famous Black Lion pub. Froghall Tunnel, at the eastern end, has a very limited air draught, requiring some boats to remove chimney pots before entering. The tree-lined sections create a woodland atmosphere but deposit considerable leaf fall on moored boats.
