Frequently Asked Questions
What type of cover is best for winter boat storage?
Heavy-duty PVC covers (400g/m²) provide the best winter protection. They handle snow load, resist ice damage, and are fully waterproof. Proper support framing prevents water pooling and maintains cover shape through winter storms.
How do I prevent water pooling on my boat cover?
Use support poles or a proper frame system to create a peaked surface that sheds water. Ensure adequate tension on the cover and check regularly during winter. Remove standing water immediately to prevent mildew and structural stress.
Can boat covers handle heavy snow?
Quality boat covers with proper framing can handle moderate snow loads. We recommend our 400g/m² PVC fabric with strong frame support. Regular snow removal is still advised to prevent excessive weight accumulation.
How much does a winter storage cover cost UK?
Winter storage cover pricing depends on boat size and complexity. Contact us with your boat details for a custom quote. We use heavy-duty PVC materials designed for UK winter conditions. No VAT charged on all orders.
True Waterproofing vs Water Resistance
Not all covers marketed as "waterproof" perform equally in real conditions. Understanding the difference between a truly waterproof cover and a water-resistant one helps you make the right choice for your boat and mooring.
How PVC Achieves Full Waterproofing
Marine PVC is waterproof because it is sealed: a woven base fabric has a PVC film bonded to its outer face under heat and pressure, creating an impermeable barrier. Unlike woven fabrics (including most acrylic canvas), there are no pores or gaps through which water can eventually penetrate under hydrostatic pressure. Rain hitting PVC runs off immediately. Standing water on PVC does not soak through regardless of depth or duration.
The only water entry points in a correctly made PVC cover are the needle holes from stitching. These are addressed with seam tape applied over all critical stitched joins — the hem, window borders, and any panel-to-panel seams. A properly sealed PVC cover is genuinely watertight.
Where Acrylic Canvas Falls Short
Acrylic canvas is water-resistant: it sheds moderate rain effectively, and its surface tension means water beads before it soaks in. But it is not waterproof in the engineering sense. Under sustained heavy rain — UK west-coast winter storms, for example — or when water pools and sits on the surface, some moisture will eventually penetrate. This is not a material defect; it is the fundamental nature of a woven fabric.
For boats that need genuine, reliable waterproofing — those moored in the open in high-rainfall areas — marine PVC is the correct choice. Full fabric comparison here. Get a quote. No VAT.
