Marine PVC vs Acrylic Canvas — A Practical Guide

The choice between marine PVC and acrylic canvas is the single most important decision when ordering a boat cover. Both are high-quality marine fabrics that perform well in UK conditions; the right choice depends on your mooring location, how often you use the boat, and what you're most concerned about protecting.

Marine PVC: Pros and Cons

Advantages: Fully waterproof — water beads off immediately and does not pass through the fabric under any conditions. More durable in abrasive conditions (trailering, rough harbour walls). Less susceptible to mould growth on the outer surface. Easier to wipe clean. Available in more vibrant colours that hold longer.

Disadvantages: Not breathable — traps moisture vapour from inside the boat, leading to condensation below decks on boats left covered for long periods. Heavier than acrylic, making it more difficult to handle solo. Can be noisier in wind as it is slightly stiffer than woven canvas.

Acrylic Canvas: Pros and Cons

Advantages: Breathable — moisture vapour passes through, significantly reducing condensation build-up beneath the cover. Lighter and easier to handle. Traditional canvas appearance preferred by owners of classic and wooden boats. Slightly softer against the boat's surface.

Disadvantages: Not fully waterproof under sustained heavy rain or deep pooling. More susceptible to mould growth if stored wet or in a damp environment. Slightly higher cost than PVC.

The Simple Rule

Moored in the open in a high-rainfall or exposed location? Choose PVC. Moored in a covered marina, boathouse, or canal basin with limited rainfall exposure? Choose acrylic. Use the boat regularly (weekly or more) during the season? Acrylic is easier to handle and the breathability keeps the boat fresher between uses.
