Frequently Asked Questions
Do you make covers for narrowboats and canal boats?
Yes, we specialize in custom covers for narrowboats including full-length tonneau covers, cabin covers, cratch covers, and bimini tops. We serve all UK inland waterways including the Grand Union, Oxford, and Leeds-Liverpool canals.
How much does a narrowboat cover cost?
Narrowboat cover pricing depends on length, coverage type, and fabric choice. Cratch covers and small sections start from around £250, with full-length tonneau covers priced individually. Send your old cover for an exact quote. No VAT charged.
What's the best material for a canal boat cover?
For narrowboats, we recommend either marine-grade acrylic (breathable, UV-resistant) or heavy-duty PVC (fully waterproof). Acrylic suits summer use, while PVC is better for winter storage. Both withstand UK canal conditions.
Can you copy my existing narrowboat cover?
Yes, we copy existing narrowboat covers exactly. Post your old cover to us and we'll create an identical replacement with improved materials and fasteners where needed. 6-day turnaround, UK-wide postal service.
Traditional Stern Covers for Narrowboats
The traditional narrowboat stern — a small, raised deck at the very back of the boat with an enclosed engine room beneath — has specific cover requirements. The trad stern is the helmsman's working area and is fully exposed to weather from all directions. A well-fitted stern cover protects the engine room hatch, tiller head, and any equipment stored at the stern when the boat is moored.
Design of a Trad Stern Cover
A trad stern cover typically consists of a main top panel that fits over the stern deck from the after-cabin wall to the stern rail, with side panels that drop down to close off the rear quarter on each side. The tiller passes through a shaped opening or lifts clear when the cover is fitted. The engine room hatch is enclosed beneath the main top panel.
Attachment is via press studs to the cabin back, the stern coaming, and the stern rail. The tiller entry point has a reinforced opening with overlap flaps to minimise rain ingress around the tiller.
Materials
Marine PVC is standard for trad stern covers: the stern position is the most exposed on the boat, and the waterproofing of PVC is essential in heavy rain. Available in all standard colours. From £389. No VAT.
Post your existing cover for an exact copy, or contact us with photographs of your trad stern. We also make cruiser stern covers and full narrowboat cover sets.
