Frequently Asked Questions
Do you make covers for narrowboats and canal boats?
Yes, we specialize in custom covers for narrowboats including full-length tonneau covers, cabin covers, cratch covers, and bimini tops. We serve all UK inland waterways including the Grand Union, Oxford, and Leeds-Liverpool canals.
How much does a narrowboat cover cost?
Narrowboat cover pricing depends on length, coverage type, and fabric choice. Cratch covers and small sections start from around £250, with full-length tonneau covers priced individually. Send your old cover for an exact quote. No VAT charged.
What's the best material for a canal boat cover?
For narrowboats, we recommend either marine-grade acrylic (breathable, UV-resistant) or heavy-duty PVC (fully waterproof). Acrylic suits summer use, while PVC is better for winter storage. Both withstand UK canal conditions.
Can you copy my existing narrowboat cover?
Yes, we copy existing narrowboat covers exactly. Post your old cover to us and we'll create an identical replacement with improved materials and fasteners where needed. 6-day turnaround, UK-wide postal service.
Narrowboat Pram Hoods
A pram hood is a fabric canopy fitted to the forward end of a narrowboat's cratch area, providing shelter for the crew when travelling or when sitting at the bow at a mooring. On narrowboats with a traditional pram well — a recessed area in front of the cabin forward bulkhead — a pram hood provides the main weather protection for crew using that space.
Pram Hood vs Pram Cover
The distinction can be confusing: a pram hood typically has some height to it — it arches over the pram well on a lightweight frame, providing genuine headroom — while a flat pram cover simply lays across the opening. If you need to stand or sit comfortably in the bow area, a pram hood with a frame is the appropriate solution; if you only need to close off the bow during storage, a flat pram cover is simpler and less expensive.
Materials and Sizing
Pram hoods are made in marine PVC (heavy-duty waterproof) or acrylic canvas (breathable, lighter). The hood fabric attaches to a steel or aluminium hoop frame — we supply the fabric; frame supply and fitting should be arranged with a local boat engineer. We make the fabric to the exact dimensions of your frame, with press stud attachments to the frame and zip access panels to the sides.
