Frequently Asked Questions
Do you make covers for narrowboats and canal boats?
Yes, we specialize in custom covers for narrowboats including full-length tonneau covers, cabin covers, cratch covers, and bimini tops. We serve all UK inland waterways including the Grand Union, Oxford, and Leeds-Liverpool canals.
How much does a narrowboat cover cost?
Narrowboat cover pricing depends on length, coverage type, and fabric choice. Cratch covers and small sections start from around £250, with full-length tonneau covers priced individually. Send your old cover for an exact quote. No VAT charged.
What's the best material for a canal boat cover?
For narrowboats, we recommend either marine-grade acrylic (breathable, UV-resistant) or heavy-duty PVC (fully waterproof). Acrylic suits summer use, while PVC is better for winter storage. Both withstand UK canal conditions.
Can you copy my existing narrowboat cover?
Yes, we copy existing narrowboat covers exactly. Post your old cover to us and we'll create an identical replacement with improved materials and fasteners where needed. 6-day turnaround, UK-wide postal service.
Narrowboat Bimini Tops
A narrowboat bimini top provides shade and light weather protection for the helmsman and crew standing at the stern. Unlike a full cratch or tonneau cover, a bimini is used while travelling — it folds down when entering locks or tunnels and deploys again when back in the open. It is particularly valued on summer cruising trips where continuous sunny days make shade at the helm position essential.
Bimini Fabric vs Bimini Frame
UK Boat Covers makes bimini fabric covers only — we do not supply or fit stainless steel bimini frames. However, we can work with any existing frame to provide a replacement cover, or quote for fabric to fit a new frame once it has been fitted. The cover attaches to the frame with webbing straps, snap fasteners, or bolt-rope channels depending on the frame design.
Materials
Narrowboat biminis are most commonly made in acrylic canvas: its breathability and lighter weight make it more comfortable to be beneath in hot weather than PVC. UV resistance is Class 4 — more than adequate for a cover used primarily for sun protection. Available in all standard colours including navy, green, cream, and burgundy. From £389. No VAT.
Post your existing bimini cover for a precise copy, or contact us with your frame dimensions. We also make cratch covers, stern covers, and full narrowboat tonneaus.
