Why Breathability Matters in a Boat Cover

A fully waterproof cover — like marine PVC — prevents all moisture from entering from outside. But boats also generate moisture from inside: wood soaks up humidity, bilge water evaporates slowly, and the temperature difference between the boat interior and the outside air creates condensation on any cold surface. A waterproof cover traps all of this moisture inside the boat.

A breathable cover — made from woven acrylic canvas — allows moisture vapour to pass through the fabric from inside to outside. This ventilation effect significantly reduces condensation below decks, preventing the mould, rot, and damp that develops in boats left covered for extended periods without ventilation.

When to Choose a Breathable Cover

Breathable covers are the right choice when:

• Your boat is in a covered marina, boathouse, or under a tarpaulin shelter — where outside rain is not the primary threat
• You take the boat out regularly during the season and prefer a lighter, easier-to-handle cover
• Your boat has wooden elements — frames, trim, or sole boards — that are vulnerable to damp
• Your mooring has limited air movement (enclosed river berths, narrow canal basins) where condensation build-up is a known problem

It carries a Class 4 UV resistance rating and passes standard waterproofing tests for outdoor marine use — so it's not unprotected against rain, just not sealed completely.
