UV Damage to Unprotected Boats
UV radiation is the single biggest cause of visible deterioration on moored boats. Fibreglass and GRP gelcoat exposed to direct summer sun fades, crazes, and loses its gloss within a single season. Vinyl upholstery cracks. Teak and other hardwood deck fittings bleach and dry out. Plastic instrument bezels and hatch surrounds become brittle. Electronics deteriorate faster when hot from direct sun exposure.
A good boat cover blocks UV completely. Both marine PVC and Odyssey Plus acrylic canvas carry Class 4 UV resistance ratings — the highest available for outdoor textile applications. Covers made from these materials block over 98% of UV radiation, maintaining the condition of everything beneath them indefinitely while covered.
Gelcoat and GRP Protection
Fibreglass and GRP hulls suffer two types of UV damage: oxidation (loss of gloss and colour depth) and crazing (hairline cracking of the surface gel layer). Both are gradual and cumulative. A hull that is covered when not in use — even for just 70% of its time in the marina — ages noticeably more slowly than one left permanently exposed. Given the cost of gelcoat polishing and repair, a boat cover pays for itself quickly.

If you have an existing cover to copy, use our postal copy service: remove your cover, post it to our Carterton, Oxfordshire workshop, and we'll return a new one in your chosen material within six working days. Your original is returned in the same parcel. No VAT is charged on any order.
