Frequently Asked Questions
How do I prevent water pooling on my boat cover?
Use support poles or a proper frame system to create a peaked surface that sheds water. Ensure adequate tension on the cover and check regularly during winter. Remove standing water immediately to prevent mildew and structural stress.
Can boat covers handle heavy snow?
Quality boat covers with proper framing can handle moderate snow loads. We recommend our 400g/m² PVC fabric with strong frame support. Regular snow removal is still advised to prevent excessive weight accumulation.
Storm Cover Features Worth Having
Standard boat covers are designed for normal UK weather — persistent rain, moderate wind, UV exposure. In genuinely severe conditions — storms, gales, tidal surge — a cover's attachment system is tested well beyond its normal working loads. The features that matter most in these conditions are different from what's needed for everyday use.
Attachment Point Specification
For boats in exposed coastal locations, on tidal rivers, or in marinas subject to frequent strong winds, we recommend upgrading the standard press stud hem to a combination system: press studs for the primary hem, supplemented by heavy-duty buckle straps to deck cleats at regular intervals. The buckle straps take the wind loading directly on the structural fittings of the boat rather than on the cover fabric.
Seam Reinforcement
We double-stitch all seams on covers specified for exposed locations and apply seam tape to critical joins — the full hem perimeter and the seams around window cutouts. These are the points where stress concentrates and where single-stitched seams are most likely to fail under sustained load.
Material Weight
Heavier fabric (850gsm PVC rather than lighter alternatives) resists wind billowing better. The stiffness of PVC means it doesn't flutter and flap in the same way lighter fabrics do, reducing the fatigue loads on attachment points over a sustained period of high winds.
All storm-rated cover features are available on any cover. Tell us your mooring conditions when ordering and we'll specify the attachment system and seam treatment accordingly. No additional charge for reinforced seam treatment. Extra buckle strap positions are quoted individually based on the number required.
