Caring for Your Boat Cover — Season by Season
Spring
In spring, before the boating season begins, remove your winter cover and inspect it thoroughly. Check all seams for separation, all windows for crazing or delamination, all zips for stiff or failing sliders, and all press studs for secure engagement. Clean the cover with mild soapy water and a soft brush, rinse fully, and allow to dry completely before storing. A cover stored while damp will develop mould at fold lines within weeks.
In-Season
During the boating season, a tonneau or cockpit cover should be put on every time the boat is left unattended — UV damage accumulates on every unprotected day. Rinse the cover periodically (monthly is sufficient for most moorings) to remove bird droppings and algae. Check press studs and zip sliders after any period of strong wind and re-engage any that have come undone.
Autumn Lay-Up
Before fitting your winter cover, clean the boat's deck and seating thoroughly. Clean the cover itself before fitting — a dirty cover can trap moisture against the boat's surface and cause staining. Ensure ventilation is adequate: at least two vents open or a breathable fabric cover if condensation is a concern. Check that all attachment points are secure enough to withstand winter winds.
Extending Cover Life
The most common causes of premature cover failure are: UV degradation of windows (replace early before they crack through), zip slider wear (replace the slider, not the whole zip), and seam separation at high-stress corners. All of these are repairable. Professional repairs from £190 can add years to a cover's life at a fraction of replacement cost.
