Tewkesbury sits at the confluence of the River Severn and the River Avon, and it is one of the most scenically dramatic moorings in England — the medieval abbey rising above the water meadows, the mills reflected in the river, and the two great rivers joining in a wide sweep just below the town. It is also, periodically, one of the most flood-prone towns in the Midlands.
The River Severn at Tewkesbury is a tidal reach — influenced by the Severn Bore downstream, which pushes up into the lower reaches and can raise water levels by a metre or more with little notice during spring tides. For boats moored here, this creates a very specific requirement: a cover that can be removed and refitted quickly, without requiring a full set of tools or a second pair of hands, so the owner can get the boat underway in a hurry if flood levels threaten the quay.
This Seamaster 27 had been moored at the Lower Lode mooring on the Severn since 2022. The original canopy was well constructed but fastened with twelve separate tension buckles that took around twenty minutes to remove. During the floods of autumn 2024, the owner had struggled to release it in time before rising water began lapping the gunwales.
We designed a replacement using our quick-release lace cord system: a continuous cord threaded through stainless steel rings runs around the full perimeter of the cover and can be loosened and the cover lifted clear in under three minutes by a single person. This replaces individual buckles with a single cord end to release, pull, and coil.
The material was 600D PVC in dark green — a colour that blends with the riverside willows and reduces the visual impact of a large covered boat on the traditional Tewkesbury quay. All side windows were cut and fitted with tinted welded PVC panels.
