Orkney Coastliner — Bespoke Cover, River Medway, Tonbridge
A fully bespoke cockpit cover for an Orkney Coastliner moored on the River Medway at Tonbridge, made in charcoal PVC with reinforced attachment points for tidal river conditions.
The River Medway at Tonbridge is tidal to the town's flood gates, and the stretch above them — where this Orkney Coastliner has been moored for the past three seasons — is a wide, tree-lined river reach that sees substantial wind funnelling through its corridor in autumn and winter. For a boat with the Coastliner's distinctive open cockpit and high topsides, a cover needs to manage both lateral wind loading and the sideways rain that comes with it.
The owner contacted us in early March 2026 after his existing cover — a generic fit from a chandlery — had blown off the boat twice during overnight storms, leaving the interior soaked on both occasions. The cover had been held by rubber bungie ties rather than positive fittings, and in sustained wind those simply were not adequate.
The Orkney Coastliner is a popular GRP day cruiser with a generous beam and a slightly complex cockpit profile — the aft section is wider than the forward section, which creates a tapered shape that generic covers can't accommodate without leaving gaps at the quarters. Patterning from the original, we were able to capture that taper precisely.
We made the replacement in our Permacote 600D PVC in charcoal grey — a neutral, professional colour that works well with the Coastliner's typical white and blue hull colours. Attachment was via stainless steel snap hooks at eight points around the gunwale rail, replacing the bungie system entirely. A central drain channel was folded into the aft panel to carry rainwater off the cover rather than allowing it to pool above the seat.
The cover was dispatched within six working days of receiving the original for patterning.
